Guinea Bissau has been plagued by conflict since independence from Portugal. Both the liberation struggle and the civil war displaced a large number of people and left the country affected by mines and ERW.
The National Mine Action Coordination Centre (CAAMI) and UNDP asked NPA to assist with Non-Technical Survey (NTS) and Technical Survey (TS) in order to help Guinea-Bissau comply with its MBT Article 5 obligations on clearance before the deadline. On 1 February 2012, NPA declared that all known anti-personnel mines had been cleared.
At the beginning of 2012, Guinea-Bissau declared it had completed its MBT Article 5 clearance obligations.
